Description

The Cottage is a house dating from around 1600 and 1700, with alterations made in the 20th century. It is timber framed and plastered, featuring a thatched roof. The building consists of two bays aligned approximately north-south, with a central chimney stack from the 17th century. There is a two-bay crosswing to the south, which is structurally separate and has an external chimney stack on the south wall, dating from the 18th century.

To the south, there is a single-storey extension with a catslide roof, and to the north, a single-storey weatherboarded extension with a lean-to roof, along with additional single-storey extensions to the east. The house has two storeys and a plain boarded door, along with a three-window range of 20th-century casements.

Inside the northern part of the house, features include jowled posts, curved bracing set inside heavy studding, a chamfered axial beam with lamb's tongue stops, and plain joists with a horizontal section. The upper rear wall contains a blocked original window, likely of an early glazed type. The roof structure consists of clasped purlins with curved wind braces. The ground floor hearth is large and has been rebuilt up to mantel level. The southern part of the house has simpler framing without jowls, with some parts pegged and others nailed, and it also features a clasped purlin roof with rafters pegged at the apices.
