Description

Nos. 37, 39, and 41 Spring Lane are a row of cottages dating from the 17th century, with later alterations and rear additions. They are constructed with a timber frame and rough render, topped by a red plain tiled roof. The cottages feature off-centre left and end right red brick chimney stacks, along with a 19th-century stack on the left single-storey extension, which is likely a former bakehouse. The buildings are two storeys high and have a four-window range of small paned vertically sliding sashes with moulded surrounds and pentice boards at the ground floor. There are three 20th-century panelled doors, also with pentice boards above.

Inside, the pegged frame is nearly complete, showcasing through bracing, stop-chamfered joists, and numerous carpenter's marks. There is a back-to-back inglenook fireplace with semi-circular backs, and a similar single fireplace in the end cottage, which is now blocked by 20th-century heating. The stairs are positioned around the chimneys, and there are vertically boarded chimney cupboards and doors, most featuring hand-wrought ironmongery.
