Description
The Abbey National Building Society Offices, also known as Bretts Stores, is a shop and office that was formerly a house. It dates from the 16th or 17th century or earlier, with later alterations and additions. The building features a timber frame with plaster and has red plain tiled roofs. There are no visible chimneys from the road. The structure has a central gabled crosswing and a lower roof level on the right range, which houses the Abbey National Building Society office.
It is two storeys high and has a symmetrical arrangement of small paned casement windows on the first floor, with a pattern of one window, one window, one window. The ground floor on the left range and gable has a 19th-century shop front that includes two light windows, panelled side pilasters, a frieze, and flat canopies. There is a central recessed shop door with pilasters, a moulded frieze, and a flat canopy supported by brackets. The right range features reveal panels leading to a 20th-century door and a 20th-century shop window, along with a slanting canopy on brackets. To the left of the main building is a two-storey infill structure that has a first-floor casement window and double garage doors.
