Description
No. 4, Spring Road is a house and shop, dated 1784, with a rear wing likely dating back to the 17th century or earlier. The front of the building is constructed of red brick, with decorative black brick detailing in the headers. It has a red plain tiled roof and external chimney stacks. The house is two storeys high, with attics and a large cellar. Architectural details include a dentilled eaves cornice and a central band. A gabled dormer is present. The first floor has three vertical sliding sash windows with segmental arches. A similar sash window is located on the ground floor to the left. More recently, two shop windows and a door have been inserted on the ground floor to the right. A two-step approach leads to the two-panel, four-light front door, which has a moulded surround, frieze, and a flat canopy supported by brackets. The date "1784" is inscribed on the right return gable. A rear wing is timber-framed, with sections plastered and sections weatherboarded.
