Description
The building housing the Alliance & Leicester and Abbey National Building Societies is a broad, three-storey structure with a five-window facade, finished in stucco and topped with a slate roof featuring bracket eaves. The first and second floors have 12-pane sash windows, although the windows in the fourth bay are blocked. Above the main entrance, which is slightly left of center, there are French windows that once opened onto a balcony. The ground floor has been modernized, featuring high transoms above windows of varying widths. The window to the right is set within a segmental arched former carriage entry, complete with quoins, voussoirs, and keystones; this entry may have been converted into a narrow doorway at some point, as a step remains. The Abbey National fascia includes a six-panel door with a raised and moulded surround.
The rear of the building is finished in cement render and has modern windows overlooking what was once a cobbled yard, with steps leading down to the cellar.
Inside, the building retains panelled shutters and six-panel doors, while the staircase features turned balusters at the newel post. The main room, which used to open onto the balcony, showcases particularly lavish details, including Gothic embossed patterning on the rear panels of the door and a highly ornate cast-iron pelmet that is quite unusual.
