Description
Chestnut Cottage is a house dating from the 17th and 18th centuries, with 19th-century and later alterations and additions. It incorporates two integral cottages to its left. The main ranges are timber framed and plastered, with a weatherboarded range to the left and a rear wing. The roofs are covered in red plain tiles, hipped to the right, and grey slate, angled and hipped to the road. There are three red brick chimney stacks. The house has two storeys and a cellar. The fenestration is arranged as a 1:1:4 pattern of small paned vertically sliding sash windows on the first floor, and a 1:1:2 pattern on the ground floor, including a hipped bay window to the right. The front features a six-panelled door with a moulded surround, a pediment to the right, and a porch with a round-headed archway to the left. The cottages at Nos. 38 and 40 are set into the angle of the rear wing and the left range, with a 2:1 window range and a board door each. Interior features include chamfered bridging joists, six-panelled doors with moulded surrounds (some with corner lugs), a cast iron fire surround, moulded cornices in some rooms, and archways to the first-floor landing.
