Description

Forge Cottage and Forge Studios, formerly known as Old Forge Cafe, is a pair of cottages dating from the 18th century, with later alterations and additions. The building features a mix of timber framing and plaster, along with painted or plastered brick. It has red plain tiled roofs and a single bay lower range on the left side. There is a red brick chimney stack located at the rear of the right building. The structure stands two storeys tall, with a central bressumer running through the right range, supported by brickwork to the left of the open carriageway. The right range also has a dentilled eaves cornice. The windows consist of small paned vertically sliding sash windows, with a 1:2 arrangement on the first floor and a 1:1 arrangement on the ground floor, featuring segmental heads on the left range. A four-panelled door is located to the right of the carriageway, accessed by steps. Attached to the left is the gable end structure of the old forge, which is part plastered and part weatherboarded, with a chimney stack on the left; this area is now part of the accommodation for Forge Studios. The building is visually significant, positioned at an acute bend in the High Street.
