Description

Peppers is a cottage dating from the 18th century, constructed with a timber frame and plastered exterior, topped with a thatched roof. The building has a two-room layout with a stair located approximately in the center and an external stack at each end. There is a 20th-century rear extension that spans the full width of the cottage and is two stories high with a flat roof. The cottage has one story with attics. On the ground floor, there are four 20th-century casement windows, while the first floor features two 20th-century casements above the door and two more in gabled dormers. The entrance is through a 20th-century door set in a thatched gabled porch. The main frame is jointed and double-pegged, with original binding beams across each ground floor room made from high-quality softwood and plain joists of square section. The structure includes primary straight bracing and two large wood-burning hearths, one of which has been modified for a 20th-century grate, while the upper parts of the stacks have been rebuilt for coal use. The roof features clasped purlins with a ridge and was built without internal tiebeams. Historical maps from the 19th century indicate that the cottage was originally divided into three tenements, later reduced to two, and has since been re-combined into a single dwelling.
