Description

Sains's Farmhouse is a house dating from the 16th or 17th century, with 19th and 20th-century additions and alterations. It is constructed with a timber frame and plastered exterior, topped with red plain tiled roofs. The front range features a red brick chimney stack that has four octagonal chimney shafts, with original moulded bases, and a restored rear chimney stack. The building has a complex plan, including a front right range with a 19th-century gambrel roofed addition on the left, and a rear left range with two adjoining turrets on the right attached to the main range. The house is two storeys, or one storey with attics, and has a cellar.

The front facade includes a three-window range of 19th-century vertically sliding sashes with side margins, and a central door with two lights. The 19th-century left addition has one front window and steps leading to a mezzanine door, with a brick-built dog kennel located beneath these steps. Interior features include halved wall bracing, a 17th-century panelled door, and hand-wrought hinges and catches on many doors. The building has jowled storey posts, with two pairs featuring original solid arched braces to the tie beam, and a painted panel above a bedroom door. The turret doorway has an arched head, and the stair turret staircase is adorned with turned balusters. There is a restored inglenook with a red brick dated panel that may be original, and a halved and bladed scarf on the rear top plate. The 19th-century servants wing includes leaded stained glass in some windows, and the roof has been rebuilt using sooted medieval timbers, with much re-used timber throughout.
