Description

Bovill's Hall is a house dating from the 15th and 16th centuries, possibly with earlier origins, and featuring later alterations and additions. It is constructed of timber framing, now rough rendered, with red plain tiled roofs. The chimney stacks are red brick, situated off-centre to both the west and east ranges, with an external stack on the west range. The building follows an L-plan, with a projecting east range. The western range has an outshot to the left and a central gable. A gabled stair turret wall is incorporated into the front wall of the left range. The house has two storeys. The L-plan front face has one window on the first floor and two on the ground floor; the left-hand ground floor window is a bay with various small paned casements and vertically sliding sashes. A C20 hipped tiled roof covers the porch at the inner angle, and there is a plank and muntin door.

Internally, much of the timber frame is exposed, showing close studding and heavy chamfered bridging joists with halved and bridled top plate scarfs. The left wing incorporates a later corridor beneath the gable, and features jowled storey posts, arched braces to tie beams, an original doorway, back-to-back inglenook fireplaces (one with a semi-circular back), two 18th-century corner cupboards, and some moulded doors. An early board front door is also present. The five-bay right range has a similar timber frame, with the stair turret incorporated into the front corridor and a later staircase installed. The southern bay of the right range is likely of older origin, and includes a very large chimney stack with back-to-back fireplaces, the kitchen fireplace having a brick firing arch and an oven with a cast iron door.
