Description

Capel Grove is a house with origins dating back to the 14th and 15th centuries, featuring later alterations and additions. It is constructed with a timber frame and plaster, topped with red plain tiled roofs that are hipped to the right of the front range. The building has a chimney stack located at the angle of the front and rear ranges, as well as an external rear stack. It stands two storeys tall, with a single storey rear lean-to and additional outbuildings, forming an L-shaped plan.

The front range has three windows, which consist of small paned vertically sliding sashes, except for the central first-floor window that is an original five-light mullion. The entrance features a central two-panel, two-light door with a moulded surround, corner patera, and a flat canopy above. The house is designed as a hall house with a crosswing that has two distinct builds. The front range boasts a four-arm octagonal crown post roof, while the rear range has a four-arm cross quadrate crown post with a splayed base; both roofs show signs of sooting.

Inside, aside from a section of a mantel beam in the current kitchen, the original inserted chimney stack is now blocked but is said to contain a bread oven. The ceilings have been inserted with heavy stop-chamfered bridging joists and ceiling beams. The structure features jowled storey posts and a raised top plate in the rear wing. In the kitchen, there is a plank and muntin door with an inserted window. The bedroom ceiling showcases fleur-de-lys plastering, though only a remnant remains. Many of the doors are vertically boarded and retain their original ironmongery.
