Description

No. 130 is a cottage located on The Street in Capel St Mary, dating from the 15th or 16th century, with later alterations and additions. The building is timber framed and plastered, topped with a red plain tiled roof and featuring a central red brick chimney stack. It is one storey high with attics, including two gabled dormers. The front has a two-window range of three-light leaded casements with board shutters, and a central 20th-century vertically boarded door. There is a rear extension.

Inside, much of the timber frame is exposed, showcasing heavy wall studs and storey posts. The ceilings have been inserted with stop-chamfered bridging joists. There is a central inserted chimney stack with blocked fireplaces; one side has an exposed mantel beam, and the original rear wall of the cottage shows a blocked bake oven. A sawn-off arched brace is visible in the rear wall storey post, while a matching brace is hidden by a cupboard, indicating that the original medieval tie beam was likely removed when the chimney was inserted in the 16th or 17th century. The front wall has shifted outward and has been stabilized with timber and iron ties to the top plate, along with hanging knees to the ground floor ceiling. The roof timbers are boarded in, and there is old pargetting on the rear wall, which is now the inner wall of the kitchen extension.
