Description

TM 03 NE CAPEL ST MARY THE STREET (NORTH SIDE) 3/59 No. 130

GV II

Cottage. C15/C16 or earlier with later alterations and additions. Timber framed and plastered. Red plain tiled roof. Central red brick chimney stack. One storey and attics with 2 gabled dormers. 2 window range of 3-light leaded casements, board shutters. Central C20 vertically boarded door. Rear extension. Internally much of the frame is exposed with heavy wall studs and storey posts, inserted ceilings with stop chamfered bridging joists. Central inserted chimney stack with blocked fireplaces, one face with mantel beam exposed, the blocked bake oven is visible in the original rear wall of the cottage. The remains of a sawn-off arched brace visible in the rear wall storey post, the matching brace now hidden by a cupboard, the feature suggests that the original medieval tie beam, supported by these braces was removed, possibly when the chimney was inserted C16/C17. The front wall has moved outwards and has been stabilized by timber and iron ties to the top plate, and hanging knees to the ground floor ceiling. Roof timbers boarded in. Old pargetting to rear wall, now inner wall of kitchen extension.
