Description
Steeple Hall is a house dating from the late 16th and early 17th centuries, with later additions and alterations. It is timber framed and plastered, with a red plain tiled roof. External red brick chimney stacks are present on both the left and right sides. The house is two storeys high with attics. A rear stair turret is weatherboarded. A two-storey range on the left, of a later date, has a grey slate roof. This range features two hipped dormers and a two-window range of 2-light vertically sliding sash windows with horns, and pentice boards to the ground floor. A central 20th-century door is set within a pedimented doorcase with fluted pilasters. To the left of the entrance is a single window and a 20th-century door within an extension, topped by a moulded flat canopy supported on brackets. Inside, original features include splat balusters and a moulded handrail to the two-storey and attic staircase. There are stop-chamfered bridging joists, a staggered side purlin roof pegged at the ridge with a halved and bladed top plate scarf. Original moulded 3- and 5-board doors with ironmongery are found on the first floor and in the attics. A 19th-century outshot rear dairy has a stone flag floor and a settling bench. Large chimney stacks may contain original fireplaces, now set within 20th-century surrounds.
