Description
Lofts Farmhouse is a house dating back to the 16th century or earlier, with significant additions and alterations from the 18th and 19th centuries. The front of the house is constructed of red brick, while the rear section is timber framed and clad with plaster or red brick. The roof is covered with red plain tiles, and there are three red brick chimney stacks. The building has a complex layout. The rear range has a hip roof, and a 19th-century crosswing with a gabled front projects to the right, with a single-story lean-to porch attached to a flat-roofed stair turret. The front has a 1:1:1 window arrangement, featuring 18th-century small-paned vertically sliding sash windows to the left, and 19th-century sashes with glazing bars to the stair turret and a three-light bay on the right. Squared pierced parapets top the stair turret and bay. A 19th-century single-story laundry/dairy extension has been added to the rear.
Inside, there is a stick staircase with a moulded string in the 18th-century range, and a separate servants' staircase. The original part of the house features a heavily stop-chamfered bridging joist. The rear wall of the original section exhibits heavy studding, likely dating from the late 15th or early 16th century, with 17th-century through bracing on the walls of what was a brewhouse. The house was occupied circa 1595 by John Bullock before he moved to Faulkbourne Hall, Witham, and is said to have been visited by Oliver Cromwell who "partook refreshment here." Later, the house was owned by Lord Byron.
