Lodge, now house. c1870. For EM Bentall. In-situ concrete, grooved to imitate masonry; roof concealed by blocking course and has central stack with 4 pots with Greek-key design. In a Classical style. EXTERIOR: single storey; 2-window range with splayed corner. Plinth and deep coved cornice. Front has 2 sash windows, with vertical glazing bars only, in reveals and further sash on splayed corner. Side elevation has portico with a fluted Doric column, a pier and 2 pilasters. Attached to right side are a pedestrian gate flanked by pilasters with cornice over and 2 large square concrete carriage-gate piers, incised to represent masonry, with stylized Greek-key design above. Wooden gates with elaborate iron grilles at top. INTERIOR: not inspected. HISTORY: built for EM Bentall as the entrance lodge to The Towers (since demolished) and an early and stylistically elaborate use of concrete as a building material.
