Description

This building is a lodge, now a house, dating from around 1870 and originally built for E. M. Bentall. It is constructed of in-situ concrete, designed to resemble masonry, and features a roof that is concealed by a blocking course, topped with a central stack that has four pots adorned with a Greek-key design. The lodge is designed in a Classical style and is a single-storey structure with a two-window range and a splayed corner. It has a plinth and a deep coved cornice. The front elevation includes two sash windows with vertical glazing bars set in reveals, along with an additional sash window on the splayed corner.

On the side elevation, there is a portico supported by a fluted Doric column, a pier, and two pilasters. To the right side of the lodge, there is a pedestrian gate flanked by pilasters topped with a cornice, along with two large square concrete carriage-gate piers that are incised to mimic masonry and feature a stylized Greek-key design above. The wooden gates are topped with elaborate iron grilles. The interior has not been inspected. This lodge was built as the entrance to The Towers, which has since been demolished, and it represents an early and stylistically elaborate use of concrete as a building material.
