Description

Nursery Cottage is a 17th-century cottage located on Goldhanger Road in Heybridge. It is timber-framed and covered in white weatherboarding, topped with a gabled plain tile roof and features a tall off-centre stack on the ridge. The cottage has one storey with an attic, but there is a large 20th-century flat-roofed single-storey extension at the rear.

The front of the cottage includes two small display gable-like dormers, each made of white boarding and featuring a small 8-pane sash window with a moulded surround. On the ground floor, there are two 2-light leaded casement windows, two 3-light similar windows, and a plain 20th-century door. The east elevation is made of painted corrugated iron, while the west elevation has a small 2-light casement window in the gable and two other small fixed windows.

Inside, the cottage has three bays of timber-framing, with the western bay likely being an extension. The central bay features a lambs-tongue stopped and chamfered spine beam with an extra notch beyond the stops, while the eastern bay has a simpler chamfered spine beam. The cottage may have originally been a converted farm building.
