Description

Middle Farmhouse is a house that was formerly a farmhouse, dating from the 17th century and possibly earlier. It is constructed with a timber frame and rendered exterior, topped with plain tile roofs.

The building has one storey with an attic and a two-storey cross-wing. The front elevation of the cross-wing features a gable and a two-light casement window, each light having one vertical glazing bar. On the ground floor, there is a door with a glazed panel and a margin-glazed sash window. The lower hall range includes a sash window with three small panes and three large panes, along with a 19th-century door. A plain tiled lean-to is located at the west end, and there is a small stack on the ridgeline near the cross-wing. The rear elevation reveals part of what is likely a former open hall roof, which has been truncated against the cross-wing and modified to accommodate a dormer-like window over the stairs.

Inside, the cross-wing consists of two bays and is unjettied, featuring a chamfered bridging joist and tapering jowled corner posts. The main range is of A-frame type, with two bridging joists—one chamfered and one framing the stack bay. The wall of small studs is exposed in the main room, and at the head of the stairs, there is a possible remnant of a collar purlin from the former open hall. Some areas of old external pargetting can also be seen.
