House, formerly farmhouse. C17 and possibly earlier. Timber-framed and rendered with plain tile roofs. EXTERIOR: one storey with attic, and 2-storey cross-wing. Front elevation of cross-wing has gable and a 2-light casement window with one vertical glazing bar in each light. The ground floor has a door with glazed panel and one margin-glazed sash window. The lower, hall, range has one sash window with 3 small and 3 large panes and a C19 door. Plain tiled lean-to on west end. Small stack on ridgeline near cross-wing. The rear elevation shows part of probable former open hall roof, truncated against cross-wing, now modified to cover dormer-like window over stairs. INTERIOR: the cross-wing is of 2 bays, unjettied, with chamfered bridging joist and tapering jowled corner posts. The main range is of A-frame type with 2 bridging joists, one chamfered and one framing stack bay. Wall of small studs exposed to main room. At head of stairs is possible remnant of collar purlin of former open hall. Some areas of old external pargeting. (RCHME: Essex North-east: London: 1922-: 138:6).
