Description

Dairy Farmhouse is a house, formerly a farmhouse, dating from the early 16th century. A cross-wing was added to the left in the early 18th century, followed by another wing to the left in the 19th century. The building has two storeys and attics, constructed with a timber frame and plastered exterior. The roofs are covered with plain tiles and feature various 18th century and later chimneys made of red brick. Most of the windows are 20th century small-pane casements, although there is an attic casement in the cross-wing with leaded lights from the 18th or early 19th century. The entrance door is a boarded design from the 20th century.

This house is an open-hall type of late and unusual form, appearing to have originally been only two bays long. The left bay is long and has an upper floor supported by heavy lodged joists. The right bay was open to the roof and contained an open hearth. The central truss features an arch-braced tie-beam and a square crown-post with bracing to the collar-purlin. The roof over the hall bay is smoke-blackened and was originally hipped. A large chimney was added to the hall in the late 16th century, of which only the lintel and jambs remain. A first floor and attic floors were added in the 17th or 18th century. Most of the original structure is made of chestnut.
