Description

Rose Cottage is a house dating from the mid to late 16th century. It originally had a 2-cell cross-passage entrance plan. The house is timber-framed with plaster infill, and has a slate roof. A red brick external end chimney, likely dating from the late 16th or 17th century, is located on the left side, serving the main hall. A second chimney was added to the service wing in the 19th century. The ground floor has 20th-century casement windows, while the first floor has 19th-century casements. A 20th-century gabled porch with framed and battened doors has been added to the front; the original 16th-century inner doorway retains its arched head of a depressed 4-centred form. The open fireplace in the hall is blocked but preserves a broad cambered lintel. The chamber above the hall contains an open truss with arch-braced tie-beam. The roof was rebuilt in the 19th century, and the original two service rooms have been combined.
