Description
The Old Rectory is a house, formerly a rectory, built in three main stages: the 15th century, the mid-17th century, and the early 19th century. It has two storeys and attics. The oldest part at the rear has a timber-framed core. The 17th-century work is in red brick, which is now painted on the south side wall. The entrance front to the east was stuccoed in the 19th century and features a band at the first floor and a moulded cornice at the eaves, along with twin 17th-century Dutch gables. The roofs are slated with internal chimneys made of red brick. The small-pane early 19th-century sash windows have cambered heads, and two of the windows include side-lights and hinged louvred shutters. The early 19th-century entrance doorway has slender sunk panelled pilasters, a moulded and dentilled open pediment, and a segmental fanlight with radiating bars, topped by a 20th-century glazed door. To the right of the entrance is an early 19th-century extension that is one window wide, added during the remodelling of the front elevation. At the rear, there is a three-bay 15th-century cross-wing that features a crown-post roof, with two plain octagonal crown posts supported by two-way bracing. A partition wall includes a blocked doorway with a four-centred arched head. The 17th-century range along the south side likely stands on the site of the 15th-century open hall, reusing its rafters in the current roof.
