Description

The Cottage at Salcote Maltings is a 17th-century building, possibly with earlier origins. It is timber-framed and rendered, originally featuring plain tile and slate roofs, but much of the cladding has been removed. The cottage has an L-shaped plan and includes a tall red-brick chimney at the back of the ridgeline and a smaller chimney stump towards the western end.

The exterior is two stories high with a one-storey-and-attic section. The long north side has ashlared render, with a gabled roof to the east and a half-hipped roof to the west. This elevation features two gabled dormers, two blocked door openings, two blocked sash window openings, and a small, low lean-to extension. The eastern end has a lower section of rendered brickwork. To the south, there is a later two-storey range with a hipped roof, which is set at right angles to the main building. This range has one blocked window on the first floor, two blocked windows on the ground floor, two shallow lean-tos, and a truncated chimney. The south elevation of this range has a pair of blocked windows on the first floor above a wide, shallow, blocked window on the ground floor. The west elevation features modern metal casements on each floor and a central hipped plain tile porch, along with a small truncated red brick chimney in the centre of the ridgeline. The south side of the main range has one blocked window and the remains of a large, low lean-to extension, while the short west elevation has a blocked window on each floor.

Inside, the oldest part is at the eastern end of the one-storey-and-attic section, which is of A-frame type and includes late 16th-century or early 17th-century timber, possibly reused, with a partition that has adorsed arch braces. The tall chimney contains remnants of an inglenook fireplace. Historically, this cottage is believed to have been the premises of a 17th-century salt master.
