Description

This building, located to the south of Little Bensons and occupied by A.R. Caldwell and Co Ltd, is an office and workshop dating from the 19th century. It is primarily timber framed with vertical weatherboarding, while the front facing High Street is constructed of red brick. The building has grey slate roofs and features an L-shaped, single-storey brick front range with a one-to-one window arrangement, including segmental arch heads. To the left, there is a three-light casement window, and to the right, a small-paned casement window beneath a gauged brick arch, both with stone cills. The eaves are moulded brick, and there are pediment cornices with a decorative band and stops. A blank, moulded brick plaque is situated on the pediment, and there is a red brick chimney with pilasters and moulded capping and base.

At the rear, there is an attached two-storey building clad in vertical weatherboarding, featuring a hipped grey slate roof and a matching red brick chimney stack with pilasters. This section has six windows on the first floor and five on the ground floor, consisting of three or four-light casements with transoms. There are three boarded doors and one double door on this face, along with one boarded door on the front range. The building forms a group with the previously listed building and Little Bensons and was likely part of Ongar Academy.
