Description

Mortons are workshops, now used as stores, offices, shops, and a restaurant, dating to circa 1830 and circa 1850, with later 19th-century and 20th-century alterations. The building is constructed of brick, with the ground floor rendered and colourwashed, and features stone dressings. The roofs are slate and stone slate, with gabled and hipped sections and single gable and ridge stacks.

The exterior presents a three-storey facade with a ten-window range, arranged as 2:1:7. The left block, composed of two builds, has, to the left, two 16-pane sashes with slightly segmental stone lintels. Adjacent to these is a smaller plain sash with a similar lintel. Above, to the left, are two 16-pane sashes, the right one slightly smaller, and to the right, a 16-pane sash. The ground floor features a wooden shopfront with half-round engaged columns to the cornice and a large name board above. To the left of the entrance is a half-glazed panelled door with overlight, and to the right an 8-pane shop window. To the right of the main block, a 20th-century window is present alongside a plain sash. The right block displays seven closely spaced 12-pane sashes, with seven 9-pane sashes above. The ground floor features three doors with lintels and raised keystones. A cart entrance is located between the left pair, featuring board doors with pedestrian doors cut into them. Between the right pair is a three-light cross-mullioned shop window with a cornice.

The left return displays three 2-light casements, with similar casements above, each featuring segmental heads. The ground floor level has two larger plain sashes, and below them, a cellar light. A block fronting onto Bailey Lane features three storeys and a four-window range. A large, altered four-light casement with toplights is to the left of the facade. To its right are four, then three, and finally a single-light glazing bar casements. Above are six 2-light glazing bar casements. The ground floor includes an altered multi-pane shop window, flanked by a segment-headed 2-light casement and a 20th-century door. To the left is a segment-headed opening with a door and a side light.

The rear elevation has four 4-light 20th-century windows with soldier courses to the left and five 20th-century casements (2 and 3 lights) to the right. Above, fourteen 2-light windows, some with glazing bars, are present. The ground floor showcases three segment-headed windows with 4 and 3 20th-century lights in the center. To the left is a single light window, then a board door with sidelight. To the right are an 8-pane window and then two casements (2 and 3 lights).

The interior has not been inspected. This building is representative of the small-scale workshops characteristic of Sheffield.
