Description
The Bow Centre, originally an elementary school and now a club, was built in 1894 by JB Mitchell-Withers for the Sheffield School Board. The building is constructed of ashlar and features a stripped Classical style.
The exterior includes a rusticated plinth, first floor, and main cornices, with the latter topped by a blocking course. The ground floor has rusticated pilasters, while the first floor features paired Ionic pilasters. The building is two storeys tall and consists of two sets of three bays. The entrance front facing Holly Street has a projecting entrance block on the right, which includes a pilastered and pedimented single bell turret with a balustrade. The first floor has two superimposed small square windows on each floor. To the left, there is a plain square-headed doorway with a panelled double door and an overlight.
The left return displays an 8-pane sash window above and a larger 8-pane sash window below. Outside, there is a wrought-iron railing with central panelled square ashlar piers and corniced caps, which flanks a bridge with a wrought-iron balustrade. The West Street front features two paired 8-pane sashes in the centre, framed by double pilasters and flanked by single blank bays. Below, there is similar fenestration. The basement has six square-headed openings with railings. The right return has paired windows on each floor, flanked by single windows, all of which are 8-pane sashes. The upper paired window is topped with a scroll pediment. The left return has similar fenestration, with a projecting block to the left that has two windows with small superimposed sashes, and to the right, steps lead to a plain doorway with a small cornice.
The interior has not been inspected. This building is part of a group that illustrates the development of the city's educational facilities on a single site, and it is included for its group value.
