Description

The Former Guard House at Fort Cumberland, built around 1746, is now used as a store. It is constructed of red brick in English bond and features a corrugated asbestos roof with a cast-iron stack on the right.

This two-storey building has seven bays, with the central three bays projecting. The south-facing front has seven arcaded bays, each topped with a gauged brick round arch. There is a brick band at the impost level. The central bay, the second bay on the left, and the sixth bay on the right have 20th-century brick infill, which includes a 12-pane centre transomed casement with a segmental head positioned beneath the middle part of the round arch. The four flanking bays are blinded, and the end bays are recessed.

On the first floor, there are six 9-pane sash windows, each set under a gauged brick segmental arch. On the far right, there is a boarded hatch door beneath a similar segmental brick arch, which is lower than the window arches and is accessed by an iron ladder and landing. The right return features a two-leaf boarded door with a 16-pane fanlight set under a gauged brick round arch. The left return is similar but has a two-leaf panelled door on the right side of the opening and a boarded side panel on the left.

The rear elevation, facing north, has three 20th-century metal casements, each set under a flat concrete arch with a concrete sill. The first floor features a boarded hatch door in the centre, set under a gauged brick segmental arch, which is approached by iron stairs and a landing. To the left, there are three 9-pane unequal sashes, and to the right, there are four, both with stone sills. On the far left, there is a similar hatch door approached by timber stairs and a landing.
