Description
The Eastney Depot Engine House, built in 1865, was formerly part of the Portsmouth Corporation Pumping Station and is now used as a workshop and store. The building is constructed of red brick in Flemish bond, with yellow and blue brick dressings. It features a low-pitched Welsh slate roof that is hipped at the center and includes roof ventilation on the right wing.
The central section is two storeys high and consists of one bay, while each wing is one storey; the right wing has three bays, and the left wing is blinded. The west elevation, which faces Henderson Road, has brick quoin strips, a brick plinth, and a moulded stone cap. In the center, there is a tall, triple-stepped recessed panel that extends through the first floor, topped with a stepped round brick arch at the eaves level. Within this panel is the original gauged brick rounded window arch, which has 20th-century brick infill below and a metal casement set under a flat stone arch, with a blue and yellow brick band at the springing level of the arch.
A moulded stone string course runs along the first floor, and there is a half-round radial glazed metal casement set within a gauged brick round arch. The moulded stone eaves course adds to the detailing. The right one-storey wing contains three metal casements with radial glazing: one with six panes, one with fifteen panes, and one with sixteen panes, each set under gauged yellow brick round arches with keystones. The stone eaves course complements the overall design. The pump house, boiler house, and chimney form a group with the engine house and gas engine house.
