Description
The Eastney Depot Gas Engine House is a gas engine house that originally housed two gas engines. Built in 1904, it was part of the Portsmouth Corporation Pumping Station and is now preserved as an industrial monument. The structure is made of red brick in Flemish bond and features a Welsh slate roof. It stands two storeys tall and has three bays.
The north-facing elevation includes a set of ten stone steps that lead down to the entrance, which is flanked by brick stone-copped walls and iron railings. The entrance features a recessed two-leaf boarded door with a 24-pane overlight above. On the first floor, there are three 16-pane metal casements, each set beneath a gauged brick segmental arch with a stone sill and a brick band at sill level. The building has dentilled brick eaves and three original metal flues attached to the exterior wall.
The right return of the building has three similar metal casements and a facing gable adorned with ornate brick patterned dentils. Inside, the engine house contains two of its original Crossley Engines and Tongye Pumps. The pump house, boiler house, and chimney form a group with the engine house and gas engine house.
