Description
Eastney Barracks, located at Eastney Fort East, is a military fortification built between 1862 and 1867, with later alterations. The structure is made of flint, red brick, and ashlar, forming a wedge-shaped enclosure that faces the sea. It features earth embankments that are flint-faced on the west, south, and east sides, along with a double ditch along the front (south side). The enclosing wall is constructed of flint rubble with red brick bands, quoined pilasters, and rounded coping. There are horizontal gun apertures at approximately one-meter intervals, as well as some larger apertures with granite surrounds. The entrance on the north side has large square piers made of banded brick and flint, with ashlar quoins and capstones, along with board gates and a mid-20th century steel gantry.
Inside, there are underground casements with arched entrances leading to lookout positions, steps that ascend to the parapets, and some surviving gun emplacements. Additionally, there are several mid-20th century brick buildings and concrete emplacements from guns used during the Second World War. The site is recognized as a Scheduled Ancient Monument.
