Description
The Lumsden Memorial, located at the east end of the former parade ground of Eastney Barracks in Portsmouth, was erected around 1918 to honor Brigadier General F.W. Lumsden, who died in 1918. The memorial is constructed of ashlar and features two steps with rounded centers on the west and east sides, leading up to a plinth that supports an obelisk. The obelisk has a cornice and is topped with a pedestal and a lion. One side of the obelisk displays a bronze relief portrait of Lumsden, while the other sides feature commemorative plaques noting that he was awarded the Victoria Cross on June 8, 1917, for bringing in six captured enemy guns under heavy fire. The memorial was originally located at the west end of the parade ground before being moved to its current position.
