Description

Eastney Barracks, located at Eastney Fort West, is a historic fortification built between 1862 and 1867, with some later alterations. The structure features a wedge-shaped enclosure that faces the sea, surrounded by earth embankments that are flint-faced on the west, south, and east sides, along with a ditch along the front (south side), which is now partly filled. The enclosing wall is made of flint rubble with red-brick bands, quoined pilasters, and rounded coping. It has horizontal gun apertures at approximately one meter intervals, as well as some larger apertures with granite surrounds. The entrance on the north side is marked by large square piers made of banded brick and flint, with ashlar quoins and capstones, and later brick infill that forms a smaller entrance. Inside, there are underground casements with arched entrances leading to look-out positions, and steps that lead up to the parapet. The site is also designated as a Scheduled Ancient Monument.
