Description
Fort Wallington is a military structure built around 1860 as part of a series of forts designed to defend Portsmouth Harbour during a period of tension with France under Lord Palmerston's second ministry. The eastern part of the fort has been demolished, and most of the earthworks, except for the south-facing curtain wall, were leveled due to road works for the M27 motorway. The fort is constructed into the hillside and features a pointed, or tooth-shaped, projection at its center. It is faced with red brick and has an earth band above with stone coping. The flanking sections are topped with a castellated parapet. There are plain blank areas beyond these sections, each containing a round-headed "Norman" doorway with flanking stone columns (one of which is missing) and a stone soffit and dripstone above. The fort also includes flat arched and segmental arched windows.
