Description
The Sea Lock and Basin, built in 1823, is likely the work of Josias Jessop. It is constructed of red brick in English bond with Roach bed Portland stone dressings. The north and south walls feature two narrow recessed panels at the east and west ends, which originally housed gates and posts. Most of the gates and posts are missing, except for part of the original oak posts at the west end. The upper iron post holding straps are set into the stone coping. At the west end, there are curved walls on each side of the entrance to the basin. The structure has stone rusticated quoins and deep coping stones at ground level, although some areas of coping are missing. The east projection into Langston Harbour has been shortened, with brickwork sloping down at the ends, a modification from the late 20th century. A later cranked iron bridge is located at the west end of the lock, and the sides of the basin have been partially restored. This site is the only surviving section of the Portsea Canal, which was part of the Portsmouth and Arundel Canal.
