Description
The former hospital and ancillary buildings at Fort Cumberland, dating from around 1746 with 19th and early 20th century extensions, are currently unoccupied. The structure is built of red brick in both Flemish and stretcher bond, with timber boarding. The central part has a tripartite plain tiled roof, while the north wing features a flat composition sheet roof, and re-roofing is in progress on the south wing. There are four brick stacks, three aligned to the left of the center part and one at the center of the south wing.
The exterior is one storey high. In the middle of the center part, there is a bricked-up former entrance with a late 20th century projecting stack at the front. On either side of this entrance are 12-pane sash windows with round-headed timber panels set beneath gauged brick round arches, stone sills, and a rendered band. The three rendered facing gables each have a round-headed recess at their center. The left wing features a 12-pane sash window under a cambered brick arch and a stone coped parapet. The far right section includes a later boarded wing with a facing gable, which has a two-leaf boarded door on the left and two 12-pane sashes on the right, each set under flat timber arches, with two S-shaped iron ties at the center of the gable.
The rear elevation has a flat-roofed wing attached to the taller center part, which features three facing gables similar to those at the front but constructed in brickwork. To the left is an early 20th century extension connected to the timber boarded wing, containing two 24-pane metal casements and a boarded door, each set under flat concrete lintels. On the right side, there are two 8-pane casements and further right, four boarded doors, each set under brick cambered arches. The interior has not been inspected.
