Description
The Former Officers' Quarters at Fort Cumberland, built around 1865, consists of separate north and south blocks that are now used as offices. The building is constructed of red brick in Flemish bond and features low-pitched Welsh slate roofs. The south block has a hipped roof on a one-storey extension to the right, while the north block has a hipped roof on a two-storey extension to the left. Each block is two storeys high with an attic and has eight bays.
On the south block, there is a half-glazed door with a three-pane overlight in the third bay from the left, set under a gauged brick segmental arch. To the left of this door are four 12-pane sash windows, and to the left of the left door are two more 12-pane sashes, all under gauged brick segmental arches with stone sills. The first floor features eight similar 12-pane sashes, a banded stone cornice, and a rendered parapet. The attic is set back behind the parapet and contains four 6-pane, two-leaf casements within slate hanging.
The north block mirrors the south block but has its doors in the far left bay and in the sixth bay from the left. To the right of the south block is a one-storey red brick extension with two 12-pane sashes, while to the left of the north block is a two-storey extension with two 12-pane sashes on both the ground and first floors. The rear elevation is similar to the front, but each block has two later two-storey projections, each with a lean-to slated roof; the north block is brick and the south block is stuccoed. The interior has not been inspected.
