117 AND 119, YORK HILL

Two cottages, dating from the 18th century, were extended during the 19th and 20th centuries to create a single house. The cottages have a timber frame and are clad in weatherboarding. The roof is a mix of materials: handmade red clay tiles on number 117, machine-made red clay tiles on the main part of number 119, red clay pantiles on the eastern extension of number 119, and machine-made mauve tiles on the northern extensions.

The original section, number 117, was a single-room cottage with an external chimney stack on the north wall and a door on the east end of the south wall. This was extended northwards to form a second cottage, number 119, sharing the same chimney stack. A single-story lean-to extension to the west of number 117 was added in the early 19th century. A two-story extension to the east of number 117, with a chimney stack at the end, followed in the late 19th century. A further two-story extension to the north of number 119, featuring a jetty to the west, was also added in the late 19th century. A large brick extension to the north was constructed around 1965.

The south-facing elevation includes a plain, 18th or 19th-century boarded door and a single 20th-century casement window on each floor. The west elevation has two 20th-century casement windows on each floor, except for the extension built around 1965.

Inside the original cottages, the axial beams have plain chamfered edges with plain stops. Softwood wallplates are present, and the majority of other timbers are hardwood. The building is part of a group with numbers 109, 111, 113, and 115 York Hill.
