Description

Wymers is a cottage dating from the early to mid 16th century, with later additions and alterations. It features a timber frame with plaster and a weatherboarded plinth, topped by a half hipped thatched roof. The building has a three-cell cross passage plan, with an addition made around 1950 to the left. The front has a range of five two-light casement windows with glazing bars and two vertically boarded doors. There are two red brick chimney stacks, one on the left and one on the right, both with attached diagonal shafts. The chimney stack on the right is positioned against the cross passage, which has been blocked and is located where the second window from the right is. The original front doorway has a segmental arched head, while the two service doorways have square rebated heads, although the studwork partition is now missing. The ceiling of the passage is made of horizontally laid joists, with a 20th-century gallery above. The original service end is now open to the roof. The hall features a large inglenook fireplace and has a ceiling of slender joists. The kitchen has an inserted ceiling of horizontal joists at the original parlour end. Remains of the crown post roof are visible, with the collar purlin surviving but curtailed, and an altered square crown post with one thin axial brace still in place.
