Description
Toot Cottage is a cottage dating from the early 17th century, which was extended around 1985 and renovated. It features a timber frame, plaster render, and a reed thatched roof. The building has a single ridge stack with a single flue, and the upper courses of this stack were rebuilt in the 19th century using white brick. The cottage is arranged in a single range of three bays with a lobby entry facing the road. It is one storey high with an attic, featuring one gable dormer and two late 20th-century casement windows on the side wall. The lobby has a doorway, while the end wall includes two three-light casements, also from around 1985.
Inside, the central room is open to the roof and has an original red brick inglenook hearth, with flues added later. There is a storage area or buttery likely located at the rear of the stack. The end wall facing the road has a chamfered clamp that supports the ceiling joists. The wall frame, which has downward bracing and jowled main posts, is mostly original, except for the sole plate added around 1985. The end wall may have been rebuilt in the 18th or 19th century. The roof is original and constructed with clasped side purlins. A partition wall between the parlour and hall extends to the ridge and contains an original doorway opening at the ground floor.
