Description
No. 43 High Street is a cottage dating from the late 17th century. It is constructed of clunch and rendered, featuring a steeply pitched roof that is now covered with asbestos. The cottage has an external side stack on the rear wall of the central bay, which was rebuilt in the 19th century. There is also an end stack on the west gable end that dates from a 19th-century subdivision. The building has a three-bay plan with an entrance to a cross-passage located between the central bay and a narrower bay at the east end, which was likely used for storage. It is one storey high with an attic and includes three dormers. There are two 20th-century windows and a doorway leading to the former cross-passage.
Inside, the partition wall between the cross-passage and the hall has been removed, and no wall framing is visible except for part of a post associated with this partition. The ceilings of two ground floor rooms are exposed, featuring heavy joists laid flat and unmoulded. The narrower bay at the east end is integrated with the cross-passage and may have served as a storage area. The roof rafters are original and are of the clasped side purlin type.
