Description

This is a late 16th-century cottage, originally the White Hart public house, with significant rebuilding in the late 19th century. The front section facing the road was reconstructed in brick during this later phase. The cottage has a timber frame, now rendered, and a pantiled roof. A lean-to extension was added on the east side, along with an outbuilding at the north end, both dating to the 19th century.

The original layout was of three bays. The upper floor has two small-paned horizontal sliding sash windows. The ground floor now features two late 20th-century casement windows. The road-facing section is a late 19th-century brick rebuild with a slate roof. There is a doorway on the west side of the building. The outbuilding to the north, also from the 19th century, was originally the public house’s cellar.

Inside, two bays of the original 16th-century house remain. These bays feature arch-braced tie beams and substantial, jowled post heads. The ground floor ceiling retains original stop-chamfered joists laid flat. A late 19th-century hearth was installed on the side wall after the original hearth was removed.
