Description
No. 16 and 18 High Street is a cottage dating from the 17th century, with an extension at the south end. The building is timber framed, with plaster rendering and part weatherboarding, and features combed wheat reed thatch at two levels. It has a ridge stack and faces the road. The cottage is one storey with an attic, and includes two gable dormers, each fitted with a small pane horizontal sliding sash. There are two doorways with boarded doors from the 19th century, along with two contemporary sliding sashes. The road-facing side has one similar sliding sash on the first floor and a casement window on the ground floor.
Adjoining the south end is a 19th-century addition, also timber framed and weatherboarded, with combed wheat reed thatch. This addition is one storey with an attic, featuring one dormer, a 19th-century casement window, and a modern window and door. At the northeast end, there is a small bay, likely added in the 19th century, which is timber framed, plaster rendered, and tiled, also one storey with an attic and containing one horizontal sliding sash. The gable end has another horizontal sliding sash and displays a plaque from the Cambridge Cottage Improvement Society, the current owners.
