Description
Bramley Cottage is a cottage that dates back to the 16th century or earlier, with alterations from the late 17th century and a 20th-century addition to the south-west. It features a timber-framed and plastered brick north-east gable and a half-hipped thatched roof, which has a rectangular red brick ridge stack positioned to the right of center. The cottage is one storey with an attic and originally had a three-unit plan, possibly including an open hall, as indicated by the hearth stone and reredos made of field pebbles found when the hearth was unblocked.
The cottage has a 20th-century thatched porch with a boarded door, and there are four ground floor windows, including one three-light horizontal sliding sash window. There is also one casement dormer eyebrow window with plain tiles below. Inside, the timber-frame is plastered, and the north-east floor frame contains reused joists. A stop-chamfered cross beam is present in the hall. The hearth includes two baking ovens and two niches that originally had shaped heads. The roof has side purlins with a pair of blackened rafters located beside the chimney.
