Description
Heydon Place is a rectory that has been converted into a house, built in 1853 for the Reverend the Honorable Latimer Neville, who later became the Sixth Earl of Braybrooke. The building is constructed of red brick featuring chequered burnt headers and limestone dressings, topped with low pitched hipped roofs covered in slate. It has four rectangular stacks and consists of two storeys plus a cellar. The main block has a rear service wing that extends to the north-west, enclosing a service yard with single-storey outbuildings.
The eaves are deep and boarded, with a moulded brick cornice. There are moulded limestone bands between the floors and below the ground floor windows. The garden facade has three bays, with the central bay projecting as a canted two-storey bay window. The entrance facade, facing north-east, also has three bays, with the central bay projecting and featuring a four-panelled door flanked by sidelights and topped with three rectangular lights. The windows have gauged red brick arches and are mainly recessed twelve-paned hung sashes, with sidelights on the garden elevation.
Inside, the house retains contemporary details with the original layout largely intact, although there have been some alterations to the service rooms. Notable features include a game room and a baking oven in the bakehouse, which remain in situ. The house is said to have been designed for use as a shooting lodge.
