Description
Purples Farmhouse is a house dating from the late 14th century and early 16th century. It is constructed with a timber frame and plastered exterior, topped with red plain tiled roofs. The building features external red brick chimney stacks on both the left and right sides. The layout includes a hall with a gabled crosswing to the right, and it stands two storeys tall with a two-window range of 20th-century three-light casements. The central entrance is a 20th-century door with a top light, sheltered by a flat canopy supported by timber.
The early 16th-century crosswing has two bays and showcases moulded bridging joists, with halved and bridled scarfs at the top plates. Inside, there is a central tie beam that is cambered, supported by arched braces and a two-armed crown post above. The doorway features a three-centred head with moulded jambs. A rear extension from the 18th century is also present.
The late 14th-century hall roof, which was originally designed with a crown post, has been modified and now consists of one and part of another bay. A floor was inserted in the late 16th century, with part of it removed when a chimney was added around 1600. The building has jowled storey posts, and the shutter groove of the main window is still visible. Additionally, there are many 18th-century doors that retain some original ironmongery.
