Description

The barn at Knowles Farm dates from the late 17th century. It is timber framed and weatherboarded, with a roof covered in corrugated iron. The structure consists of four bays arranged east to west, featuring a midstrey to the south and lean-to extensions on either side of the midstrey. Originally, the barn had an aisle only to the north, which is now infilled with later studding. The barn includes face-halved and bladed scarfs, arched braces to two tiebeams, while other tiebeams have been replaced with bolted knees. The frame is made of pegged hardwood with primary straight bracing and a clasped purlin roof. The base of the walls is partly concreted.
