Description

This barn, dated 1690 on the tie-beam, is located about 100 meters northeast of Knowle Farmhouse. It is timber-framed and stands on a rubble stone plinth, with weatherboard cladding and a half-hipped thatched roof. The barn consists of eight bays and includes a north aisle. The north side features two hipped porches with double planked doors, while the south side has double planked doors and an open cartshed in the two left-hand bays, along with a lean-to extension and an attached stable on the right.

Inside, the barn has tie-beam and collar trusses with straight struts and straight bracing connecting the jowled main posts or aisle posts to the tie-beams and arcade plates. There are two tiers of through purlins, and the two western bays are partitioned off with timber-framing.

Attached to the west end is a mid-19th century single-storey range of stables, constructed with flint and brick bands and topped with a tiled roof. This range features two segmental-headed planked stable doors and one double door with a transom light to the left, along with four flat-arched 20th-century windows and two hipped half-dormers that include a loft door or casement.
