Description

The barn to the north of Knowles Farmhouse dates from around 1600. It features a timber frame with black weatherboarded walls and a thatched roof that is ridged and gabled with fly-hips. The barn stands on high red brick footings laid in Flemish bond, and there is one midstrey facing north from the west end. Inside, the tie-beams were originally arch braced but are now supported on knees. There are two purlins on each slope with raking struts and bladed scarfs. The barn was originally floored at half height and may have served as a granary.
