Description
Witham United Reformed Church is a non-conformist church built in 1840. It features a red brick exterior with a grey brick pedimented facade, stucco dressings, and a grey slate roof. The rear section has grey brick pilasters and dressings. The building is two storeys high, with a one-storey section, and has a window arrangement of 1;3;1 at the front, where the central part projects forward. This section is adorned with a moulded entablature and Tuscan pilasters. The outer first-floor windows taper to the top in an Egyptian style, featuring stucco moulded heads and glazing bars. The central part has three tall windows with semi-circular heads and glazing bars. On the ground floor, there are three rectangular lights flanked by pairs of double doors, each with bolection mouldings and rectangular fanlights in a stucco surround. A small rectangular ventilator is located in the center of the pediment, also with a stucco surround, and is reduced in an Egyptian manner.
Internally, the original layout remains intact, with a hall and meeting room at the rear. The first-floor gallery is arranged in a "U" shape on iron columns, featuring raised and fielded wooden balcony panels with paterae. This gallery was cut back in 1985 to accommodate a concrete staircase, and the original Yorkstone angle staircases have been removed. The church contains many original fittings as well as some from the late 19th century. The organ case and cast end fittings have been temporarily removed.
