Description

Lotfield House is a house located on Lotfield Street in Orwell. It features an early 17th-century crosswing at the north end and a late 18th-century rebuild of the main range. The crosswing is timber framed and rendered, topped with a tiled, hipped roof that has a ridge stack with two flues. The house is two storeys high and has three modern small pane windows. The main range, built in the late 18th century, is made of painted brick, with some timber framing from the earlier house now obscured in the rear wall. It has a tiled, mansard roof and a late 18th-century end stack, also two storeys high with an attic, featuring two dormers and two recessed hung sashes on both the first and ground floors. Within the property is an outbuilding from the 18th and early 19th centuries, constructed of brick in English bond and tiled, with parts made of clunch, timber frame, and weatherboarding, including a pantiled roof at the rear.

Inside the crosswing, there are two bays with an arch-braced tie beam and jowled heads on the main posts. The crosswing has abutting inglenook hearths from the late 18th century, along with a contemporary bread oven. Downward wall bracing is visible internally. The main post of the centre truss on the west side has been cut down above the inglenook, indicating that the inglenook is a later addition. The late 18th-century range was likely built on the site of the earlier 17th-century main range, with part of the middle rail now serving as a door lintel visible in the rear wall.
