Description
The Old Vicarage is a house located on Church Lane in Balsham, dating from the early 16th century, 17th century, and early 18th century. It features a timber frame with plaster rendering and a tiled roof. The roof over the main range has been raised, and there is a ridge stack made of red brick. The building has a T-plan layout, with an early 16th-century north-south crosswing that is two storeys high, containing one modern casement window on each storey. The late 17th-century east-west main range has had its roof raised around 1700, adding a first floor and attic. This section is also two storeys high and includes one dormer, one window on the first floor, and two modern windows at ground level. The doorway is located in the angle between the main range and the crosswing.
Inside, the crosswing consists of two bays, with a wall frame that has heavy, closely set studs of uniform size. It features curved downward bracing, jowled main posts, and ceilings in the ground floor rooms with flat, unmoulded joists. The roof has been rebuilt. The main range also comprises two bays, with a mid to late 17th-century ground floor and a roof raised with a first floor added around 1700. It includes an inglenook hearth and stack made of red brick from the mid to late 17th century. The first floor shows evidence of the roof raise, with original wall plates visible and raised main posts that are tenoned and pegged to the plates. The roof from around 1700 is of the staggered, butt purlin type.
