Description

BALSHAM CHURCH LANE TL 5850 (North side) 11/3 The Old Vicarage 22.11.67 (formerly listed as the Old Rectory) GV II House. Early C16, C17 and early C18. Timber framed plaster rendered. Tiled. The roof over the main range has been raised. Ridge stack of red brick. T-plan. Early C16 north-south crosswing of two storeys. One modern casement to each storey. Late C17 east-west main range. Roof raised c.1700, and first floor and attic added. Two storeys and attic. One dormer. One window to first floor and two at ground floor, all modern. Doorway in angle between main range and crosswing. Inside: cross-wing of two bays. Wall frame has heavy close set studs of uniform scantling. Curved downward bracing, jowled mainposts and ceiling of ground floor rooms with joists laid flat and unmoulded. The roof has been rebuilt. Main range also in two bays. Mid-late C17 ground floor,roof raised and first floor added c.1700. Inylenook hearth and stack of red brick. Mid-late C17. First floor has evidence of roof raise. Original wall plates visible with raised main posts tenoned and pegged to the plates. Roof of c.1700. Staggered, butt purlin type.
