Description
The building known as the Barn and Cottage to the west of Number 9 (White Hall) is a Grade II listed structure. It features a late 18th-century conversion of what may have originally been a 17th-century barn, with a cottage added to the east gable. The construction includes timber framing, with the ground floor boarded and the first floor plastered, topped by plain tiled roofs. The barn stands two storeys high and has a cellar in the left bay, while the cottage is a single storey with an attic. There are two red brick chimney stacks from the 18th century, one on each side, along with an inserted window and one original late 18th-century school window featuring glazing bars. To the right, there are garage doors and a boarded door. The cottage has two 20th-century casement windows and a glazed door, as well as one casement dormer window and a stack on the left side.
Inside, the barn consists of five timber-framed bays with a double side purlin roof. It was converted into a school with inserted floors and later transformed into a granary in the mid-19th century. The school was established around 1780 by the Wedd family, who were dissenters and educators. In 1848, the property was purchased by Mr. Stockbridge, a miller.
